A study on the influence of PAS on the thyroid gland, carried out clinically in adults mainly in terms of thyroid activity, produced the following result: 1. Seventy-seven patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, treated with PAS, did not show any alteration in thyroid activity, which might be attributed to differences in the total amount of the drug administered, i. e. in the length of period for administration of the drug. 2. Administration of PAS resulted in deficiency of thyroid activity. It was presumed that this was because PAS combined with iodine, thus preventing iodination of tyrosine and synthesis of thyroid hormone. 3. In patients with Basedow's disease, PAS had the effect of temporarily and slightly alleviating subjective symptoms and improving thyroid activity. 4. It was observed that PAS has a goitrogenic action. In patients with symptoms of goiter, there was a marked lowering in thyroxine sontent of the blood. The condition represents a result of compensatory hyperplasia of the thyroid gland which is caused by TSH from the pituitary. 5. PAS goiter was cured with thyroxine.
