Based on the theory of the third effect of polarization, attempts were made to treat spinal infantile paralysis by means of low frequency rectangular pulse spinal polarization, and the results were evaluated from both clinical and electrophysiologic standpoints. The rectangular pulses of a frequency 1000 c/s and 3-5 mA, with a durationpause ratio 2:1, were applied, with the anode at the affected spinal segment and the cathode at the paralyzed muscle. It was expected that anodal polarization might have the third effect on the affected spinal segment, lowering the electrical threshold by causing a change in permeability of the nerve membrane, and that cathodal polarization might stimulate the paralyzed muscle. To obtain knowledge on the mechanism of action of spinal polarization, studies were made on electromyograms, as well as on the influence of the polarization on the spinal reflex action, particularly on the H wave elicited by stimulation of a peripheral nerve, which is said to indicate excitability of the anterior columnar cells. The studies showed that low frequency rectangular pulse spinal polarization was effective in raising excitability of the anterior columnar cells and facilitating the transmission of nerve impulses through the synapse under anodal polarization. It was found to be of considerable value from clinical standpoint also, being effective on 84.3 per cent of 74 cases treated from June, 1955 through February, 1956.
