The author studied 61 cases of the parotid gland of different origins, which consisted of: 3 cases of adenoma simplex, 3 cases of cystic adenoma, 25 cases of the so-called mixed tumors, 9 cases of adenocarcinoma, 2 cases of squamous-cell cancer, 2 cases of carcinoma simplex, 4 cases of hemoangioma, one case of lynphangioma, one case of lymphoma, 2 cases of sarcoma and 9 unidentified cases due to the absence of histologic evidence. These cases were arranged into 6 groups basing on clinical observations. 44 cases had been treated inadequately and not cured, some of them had recurred, and developed troublesome complications. There were more masculine than feminine in malignant tumors. There were no sexual difference in other groups. Patients of malignant and mixed tumors were older than those of benign tumors. Patients of sarcoma were younger, angioma occurred only in young women. Tumors located infraauricular, 66.1 % ; preaauricular, 13.6 % ; cheek, 12.5 % ; and retroauricular potion, 6.8 %. 29 tumors in the superficial lobe, 13 tumors in the deep lobe and 9 tumors in both lobes. The largest tumor (mixed tumor) weighed 3.95 kg. There were facialis paralysis in 8 cases, paralysis of 4 cases occurred in postoperative course with inadequate plan, the other were carried by infiltration of tumor cells. 12 patients of malignant tumors complained on pain, 7 on difficulty in chewing and swallowing. 12 metastases in the cervical lymphnodes, and 5 metastase in distant parts of the body. Fistula performed resulting from previous surgery in 6 patients. 7 extended total parotidectomy were pursued with one ; three years survials, and others had died through 4 recurrence, one apoplexy and one hemorrhage. 16 total parotidectomy in 3 cancers, 5 angiomas, 4 mixed tumors and 4 adenomas. Twe of the 3 cancers had died through one recurrence and one apoplexy. 22 partial parotidectomy in 3 cancers, 17 mixed tumors and 2 adenomas. One of the 3 cancers had died through hemorrhage. All cases of cancer were followed by postoperative radiation. Temporarily paralysis after total or partial parotidectomy disappeared within one month and there was no fistula. Frey's syndromes occurred after 5 months following surgery in 52.8 %. Gustatory sweating and flushing tests were positive in all the patients examined ; these phenomons appeared in the region governed by the auriculotemporal and great auricular nerve.
