The change in urinary sediment, which has been considered to be a yardstick for renal function, is of value in clinical diagnosis of patients with diseases of the kidneys and in forecasting the probable result of these patients. The author feels that quantitative and qualitative examination of urinary sediment should be performed as part of routine tests for diseases of the kidneys. In the present study Addis connt was made in 100 normal, healthy persons and patients suffering from various diseases of the kidneys in order to determine the relation between the change in urinary sediment and the types of renal diseases, the stages of renal diseases and the renal damage degree. In patients with various diseases of the kidneys, day and night twelve-hour specimens of the urine, as well as specimens of the urine obtained before and after physical exertion, tonsilectomy and Fischberg's concentration test, were examined for possible change in urinary sediment. Fluctuations in urinary sediment in various stages of renal diseases were also investigated. By administering several kinds of diuretics, especially a mercurial diuretic, and hormone preparations to patients with chronic nephritis and nephrotic syndrome, urinary sediment was calculated to determine if the treatments have any unfavorable influence on urinary findings, and if there are indications for these treatments in these patients.
