Studies were made on the resistance to streptomycin, PAS and INAH of the tubercle bacilli isolated from the tuberculous lesions as well as the sputa of 260 patients with chronic pulmonary tuberculosis in whom resistance tests had been carried out during the period from 1954 to 1958. The results of the studies are summarized as follows: (1) The tubercle bacilli sensitive to these drugs had positive catalase tests, while many of those that were resistant to INAH produced negative reactions to catalase tests. (2) It appeared that the patients whose sputa were positive for tubercle bacilli which proved to be resistant to these drugs in spite of their having received no chemotherapy, has shown a considerable increase in number every year during the period under review. (3) It seems that, if these drugs were used in combination, it would be possible to prevent tubercle bacilli from acquiring resistance to.them and to prolong the period during which chemotherapy could be continued, contributing to the attainment of better therapeutic results. (4) It would seem that resistance to each of these drugs developed earlier in the second course of chemotherapy than in the first one. (5) There seemed to be no definite relation between the tubercle bacilli that acquired resistance to streptomycin and those that developed resistance to PAS in their behavior after having acquired resistance. It was considered likely, however, that the tubercle bacilli, after having acquired resistance to INAH, might relinquish their resistance, becoming sensitive again. (6) Studiesof the manner in which tubercle bacilli in lesions acquire resistance to these drugs as well as of resected specimens of lung indicate that surgical treatment had better be given, if given at all, during the first three months of the second course of chemotherapy, lest tubercle bacilli should develop resistance to drugs.
