By measuring the circumference of the chest when patients were breathing deeply, studies were made of the respiratory movements of the chest in 183 patients who had been treated at our clinic with surgical extirpation of pulmonary lesions and whose status of health following operation was known to us. It was revealed that examinations of thoracic movements might be of value in predicting probable results of patients undergoing surgical treatment. The results of studies are summarized as follows : 1. The patients with the chest showing large movement on respiration were shown to have slight adhesion of the pleura and minimum pulmonary involvement of the disease. Reexpansion of the residual lung and restoration of pulmonary function in postoperative periad took place without a hitch in these patients. Reexpansion of the lung and restoration of pulmonary function were a slow process in patients with the chest showing little respiratory movement, unless adequate measures were taken to promote recovery following operation. 2. The patients with the chest showing large movement on respiration, though their pulmonary function is not as it should be prior to operation, would demonstrate smooth recovery of pulomonary function, with the lung which is not operated on showing compensatory activity, if adequate measures are taken following operation. 3. Many of the patients with the chest showing little movement prior to operation were shown to have poor status of health following operation. It seems that in those patients the decision as to whether surgical extirpation should be recommended must be made after thorough consideration of the circumstances involved.
