That iontophoresis is far more effective than merely applying drugs on the surface of the body and letting them penetrate through the body tissue to heal the deep-seated disease has been recognized in ophthalmology and dermatology. By using iontophoresis, the author has achieved good results in the treatment of inflammatory diseases in the field of gynecology. Experiments performed in patients having hysterectomy provided theoretical basis to the value of iontophoresis in the treatment of gynecologic patients. Studies of excised uterus showed that sulfamine that han been introduced into the body by means of iontophoresis prior to operation had penetrated in large amount into the muscles of the uterus and the mucosa of the fallopian tubes. Administration of azan, a tumor suppressing agent, by means of iontophoresis has achieved fairly good results in treating cancer of the cervix uteri without having any side-effects.
