By using Venning's method, estrogen levels in the urine of expectant mothers as well as non-pregnant women were estimated. (1) Studies of the urine of 94 expectant mothers revealed that urine estrogen levels increased with every month in pregnancy. (2) Urine estrogen levels of 9 puerperal women suddenly dropped after the placenta had been expelled, falling below 1000γ on the fifth day in the puerperium. (3) There was no evidence of markedly increased urine estrogen levels in cases of twin pregnancy. (4) Urine total estrogen levels of 37 expectant mothers with toxemias of late pregnancy were lower than those of normal expectant mothers. The levels of estron and estradiol fractions were also lower in them than in normal expectant mothers. (5) Increases in urine estrogen levels following injections of the hormone were estimated in 10 patients with myoma of the uterus before and after surgical removal of tumors. Increases in urine estrogen levels were larger in the postoperative period than in preoperative period. This shows that the presence or absence of the uterus may exert no small influence on estrogen metabolism. (6) The measurement of the rise in urine estrogen levels following injections of the hormone was made in the same way in 16patients with carcinoma of the cervix uteri. Increases in urine estrogen levels were larger in the postoperative period in about half the patients examined, while in the remainder of the patients reverse was the case. It is presumed that this may be due to the fact that in patients with carcinoma of the cervix uteri various factors, such as disturbance of liver functions, impairment of the estrogen target cells by the toxin produced by cancer cells, conspire to present a complicated clinical picture.
