The facts revealed by the author in his previous work show that the plasma total ascorbic acid levels are higher in pregnant women than in nonpregnant ones, and that they are near the saturation point even when expectant mothers are fed on regular diet. This has led the author to have doubts in the validity of the established theory that there is increased ascorbic acid metabolism in pregnancy. Experiments on ascorbic acid metabolism were carried out in expectant mothers. They were divided into two groups, one group to be fed on a diet containing regular amount of ascorbic acid (50mg per day) and the other group to be fed on a diet low in ascorbic acid content (10mg per day). Some nonpregnant women were used as controls, and they were also divided into two groups to be fed on different diets in the same way as in expectant mothers. Before and after the ingestion of the prescribed diets, the plasma ascorbic acid level and the amount of ascorbic acid excreted in the urine were determined The values obtained with expectant mothers were compared with those obtained with controls. There was no difference between expectant mothers and controls in the values obtained. This observation will indicate that there is no increased ascorbic acid metabolism in pregnancy. In connection with this observation, the possibility of ascorbic acid being formed by the placenta is discussed.
