35 cases with vegetative dystonia (including 3 outpatients) selected out of patients treated from June 1955 to March 1956 in the 2nd Clinic of the Internal Medicine Chiba University, besides 10 normal cases, were observed electroencephalographically with special reference to the influence of autonomic agents (Chlorpromazine, Reserpine & Deserpidine "Ciba", Bellergal "Sandoz" ). A. The effects of Chlorpromazine, Reserpine, & Deserpidine upon electroencephalogram. By the application of those drugs, there could be found, as a rule, the increase in mean period and mean amplitude, occasionally accompanied with the slow waves in the group suffered from vegetative dystonia, while these changes appeared seldom in the control group. This tendency was clear-cut especially by the administration of C. p. 1. About mean period a. By the intramuscular injection with 25 mg of Chlorpromazine The patients who showed 20 % increase in m. p. at 30', 60' and 90' after the injection were found above 60 % in the group of vegetative dystonia (27 cases), whereas below 25 % in the control group (8 cases). b. By the intravenous injection with 1 mg of Reserpine In the group with vegetative dystonia, 5 of 8 cases showed 10 % increase in m. p. at 30' after the injection and 3 cases at 60', 6 at 90' respectively while in the normal group such changes were not seen. c. By the intravenous injection with 1 mg of Deserpidine In the group with vegetative dystonia, 6 of 9 cases showed above 20 % increase in m. p. at 30' later the injection, and each 3 cases at 60' and 90' respectively. 2. About mean amplitude a. The increase in m. a. due to the administration of C. p. was not so remarkable in its degree as that in m. p.. Those who showed above 20 % increase in m. a. were found in 10 of 37 patients with vegetative dystonia at 30' after the injection, whereas in 2 of 8 normal cases; at 60' later in 14 of 27 patients while 3 of 8 normal cases; at 90' later in 7 of 25 patients whereas in 1 of 7 normal cases. b. By the injection of R. s., those who showed above 20 % increase in m. a. were observed in a half of patients with vegetative dystonia equally at 30', 60' and.90', while only in one of two normal cases. c. By the injection of D. p., those who showed above 20 % increase in m. a were seen in 3 and less of 9 patients with vegetative dystonia equally at 30', 60' and 90' subsequently. 3. About the slow waves In the group with vegetative dystonia there were apt to appeare markedly the slow waves due to C. p.. a. At 30' after the injection of C. p., the slow waves were found in 23 of 27 patients with vegetative dystonia, whereas only to the slight extent in 3 of 7 normal cases. b. At 30' atter the administration of R. s., the slow waves were seen in a half of the patients with vegetative dystonia, and the degree of the appearance of the slow waves was far slighter than that due to C. p.. No one showed the slow waves in the normal group. c. The occurrence of the slow waves elicited by the application of D. p. was scanty in its frequency, i. e., in 3 of 9 patients with vegetative dystonia; one case among them showed slow waves "en salve". B. The influence of Bellergal upon electroencephalogram Bellergal was used 6 tablets pro die 10 or 20 days and the influence of the clinical improvement upon electroencephalogram was investigated in 2 patients with vegetative dystonia and one normal case. C. The influence of the breath-holding upon electroencephalogram The observation was. made in 6 normal cases and 23 patients with vegetative dystonia. Among the patients the shortening of m. p. and the frequent appearance of Beta waves or fast waves were found. By hyperventilation the shortening above 10 % m. p. occurred in 12 of 23 patients, by breath-holding in 16 of them, and at 1' after the cessation of the breath-holding in 11 of them, whereas among the control group at the respective time-points in 1, in 2 and in 1 of each of 6 cases. Both the examination of the occurrence of slow waves due to C. p. and hyperventilation breath-holding test, denoted, to a certain extent, the abnormal nervous tonicity in the vegetative dystonia. In addition to observations above mentioned, the influence of the "repressure method" upon the electroencephalogram of 35 patients suffered from Caisson disease treated in the Chiba Rosai Hospital was investigated. The re-pressure method improved clinical findings; inclusive of the autonomic disturbances in those cases who were treated even after the laps of one year and more. Meanwhile electroencephalographic tracing could be done in two patients among whom the mean amplitude tended to increase or the slow waves to disappear.
