During the period from 1943 to 1949, the author had occasions to examine 18 patients who showed signs of recurrence of cancer involving the vaginal stump. These patients had had cancer of the cervix uteri treated by extensive abdominal hysterectomy several months to several years before. In order to see if there were any evidences of cancerous growth left unremoved, the whole edge of the vaginal stump removed together with the uterus from these patients was studied histologically. Eleven out of the 18 samples had such evidences, while the rest of the samples were free from the cancer tissue. These 18 patients had all received X-ray irradiation after surgery. A few of them had received radium irradiation in addition to X-ray irradiation. Examinations revealed that the patients who had received both X-ray and radium irradiation enjoyed longer period of remission than the patients who had received X-ray irradiation only. This will indicate the value of radium irradiation for the pi evention of recurrence of cancer in the edge of the vaginal stump. The author is in favor of administering radium irradiation in addition to X-ray with great care following extensive abdominal hysterectomy in patients with cancer of the cervix uteri, so that the recurrence of the disease in the vaginal stump may be eliminated.
