In this paper are reported some results of bacteriological experiments concerning the feces of constipation. These experiments were planned to make clear the relationships between feces of normal excretion and those of constipation. Two situations were adopted under which the constipations were brought about. In the first case constipation resulted in dogs which were given opium, in the, second, constipation in of I persons caused by senility was examined. The results are summarized as follows. (I) Experiment 1. Constipation by opium in dogs: Young dogs became constipated, when an adequate quantity of 1.0 % opium solution was given. This drug was administered into their stomach by a catheter, usually twice a day. The author examined the feces of each dog before the drug was given, and after the costipation occured. Examinations were done once in the former period and three times in the latter period, and the interval of examination was one week. During the experimental period, care was taken to maintain environmental sanitation and diet-control. (I) After the beginning of the constipation the pH degree of the feces became acidic, and the pH degree of six feces varied between 4.8 and 6.4, and only one remained at 7.0. (III) Difference of bacterial strains in feces between normal period and constipated period could not be explained in a short description. The bacterial number in each feces, as a whole, came to be reduced after the onset of constipation. In most cases, when the pH degree of feces was of 4.8 to 6.4, relative increasing of L. acidophilus and relative decreasing of E. coli were observed. But in one case, when the pH degree of feces remained at 7.0, L. acidophilus decreased and E. coli increased, and occasionally Cl. welchii-was found. (IV) The inconstancy of bacteriological features in feces, that have been mentioned in previous paragraphs, seemed to be caused, by the peculiar action of opium on the vegetative nervous system. And it was difficult to control the action of the drug to maintain an adequate constipation in the animals. (V) Constipation of old persons: The author carried out bacteriological examinations on the feces a old persons in a sanatorium for the aged. A group having normal excretion and a constipated group were selected, both groups consisting of ten persons. It was previously ascertained that the old persons had equal diet and had taken no medicament. (VI) The feces of the constipated group were inclined to alkalise, and the pH degree varied between 7.2 and 7.6. The feces of the normal group were, on the contrary, slightly acidic, and the pH degree varied between 6.2 and 6.6. (VII) Difference of bacteriological features between two groups was clearly distinguished. In she normal group, the number of each bacterial strain, such as E. coli, St. fecalis and L. acidophilus, was almost equal to the other strains. And the number of L. acidophilus was slightly in excess of that of E. coli. In the constipated group, there was a clear difference in bacterial number between each strain respectively. The number of E. coli was distinctly in excess of that of L. acidophilus. Several other differences between the normal and the constipated group were as follows. Bacteroides (Fujikawa's Type II, containing Bacillus peloton) was found more frequently in the constipated group than in the normal group. Cl. welchii was always found in the constipated group, but seldom in the normal group. (VIII) Different features of two kinds of constipation, one caused by opium and the other caused by senility of old age, seemed to be the results of different kinds of mechanisms. It might be said that the former are caused by narcotic injury of the vegetative nervous system, while the latter are caused by asthenia of the intestine, weakness of the whole body, shortage of movement etc. So the feature of constipation caused by opium is much more complicated than that caused by senility. Because of this reason, it seemed that bacteriological features in the feces of old persons were quite identical, while the feces of the dog from opium constipation were varied in their aspects.
