The use of animals raised in germ-free environment is considered to be the most appropriate method for testing the influence of intestinal organisms on the host. The author has compared the growth and general condition of chicks given by mouth L. acidophilus, facultive anaerobe bacteria with those of chicks given E. coli and. Cl. sporogenes. The chicks used in the experiments were hatched and raised in germ-free equipments developed by Saito and Kawai. Eggs of white leghorn hens were sterilized with germicide and placed in several different types of equipments for germ-free raising of chicks. From 10 to 15 days after being hatched, germ-free chicks were given by mouth 1 ose each of L. acidophilus. They showed far better growth than the germ-free chicks used as controls. Chicks given a combination of L. acidophilus and E. coli in the same way showed as good a growth as controls, and such unfavorable effect of the administration of E. coli as had been reported previously by Saito was not observed. The larger the number of L. acidophilus deposited in the intestines, the better was the growth of chicks. The administration of L. acidophilus and Cl. sporogenes to chicks at the same time resulted in their showing slightly worse growth as compared with controls, though the effect it had on chicks was no worse than that exerted by the administration of Cl. sporogenes alone. The chicks in which better deposit of L. acidophilus was proved showed a fairly good growth. The result of the present experiments would indicate that L. acidophilus exerts favorable influence on the growth of animals and has antagonistic effect on E. coli and Fl. sporogenes.
