Atrophic rhinitis(ozena) is a disease that has defied the attempts of various investigators to elucidate its origin. Of all the theories advanced so far, the most well known is one which claims that the disease would be caused by the presence of microorganisms. In the present paper, the author summarized the results of observations that had been carried out on the variations in nasal flora in 25 cases of atrophic rhinitis(ozena) before and after they had heen operated on by Kubo's method (a modification of Kitamura's method) since 1953. Bacteriological theory of the origin of atrophic rhinitis was examined dynamically by virtue of the characteristic features of the surgical procedure employed in the present investigations, and the surgical procedure itself was evaluated from the standpoint of the physiology of the nose. The investigations have revealed that, whereas all the cases examined were positive for microorganisms before operations, they have become negative or the microorganisms have been reduced in numbers afteroperations; that myriad varieties of the nasal flora are found throughout the whole period of observation; that the relationship between the three cardinal symptoms, i.e. crust formation, bad smell and atrophy, and the nasal flora is very delicate; and that there are evidences suggesting a possibility that maxillary sinus might play an important role. In view of the decrease in the numbers of microorganisms as well as of promoting the building up of tissues in the nose, it must be said that Kubo's method of operation is an excellent surgical procedure.
