(1) The author examined thyroid function in 84 cases of simple goiter and 15 cases of hyperthyroidism. (2) In all the cases of simple goiter but one, serum protein bound iode levels were in normal range, the average value being 5.8±0.81γ%. Its average value in cases of hyperthyroidism was 9.86±1.41γ%. (3) Normal urinary I^<131> level was 60.7%±2.4%. In cases of simple goiter, the average urinary I^<131> level was 52.1%±2.89%, but a wide range of levels was exhibited; the levels in 22.5% of then-i were lower than normal ones. In cases of hyperthyroidism, the average level was 27.4%±12.1%, which is apparently lower than the normal ones. (4) Comparison of curves demonstrating variations in serum I^<131> levels observed for periods of 96 hours and 24 hours has shown that curves obtained with all the cases of simple goiter as well as normal persons showed a downward trend, while those obtained with all the cases of hyperthyroidism showed an upward trend. (5) Thyroid hormone treatment would be most appropriate for cases of simple goiter, since they are considered as cases of compensatory hypertrophy attributed to some sort of disturbances in synthesis of the hormone.
