Single injection of the suspension of the germs of Staphylococcus flavus and of Streptococcus hemolyticus into the left ventricle of the heart in rabbits and mice which had received no treatment beforehand caused septic thrombo-endocarditis in 1 out of 11 rabbits and in 5 out of 25 mice. Unlike rheumatic and subacute bacterial endocarditis, valvulitis produced in the present experiments was marked by the absence of formation of the granulation tissuecharacteristic of demarcating inflammation, little response in the valvular tissue and necrosis of the endotherial cells and superficial ulcer in the valve, where the deposit of a large amount of micro-organisms and thrombosis of a slight degree could be observed. This would indicate that the sudden onrush of a large amount of germs into the left ventricle of the heart has resulted in the damage to the valve due to the action of the germs.
