With the aim of enhancing the curability in cancer of the stomach, especially the stomach, especially the pylorus, extensive resection of the colon combined with the primary lesions has been carried out at my clinic by the new method developed by Prof. Nakayama, if there should be indications for surgery due to involvement of the colon or the mesocolon. Oftentimes surgeons encounter the episod of diarrhoe at the early postoperative date following such major operation. To explore fluid and electrolyte economy after these operative procedures, the abnormal loss of water and a variety of electrolytes to feces, transition of the body fluid and clinical findings were precisely evaluated. Animal examination was also conducted to observe the absorptive property of these elements through the intestinal wall with the animals submitting to such major operation. On the basis of this study it was confirmed that 1) transient abnormalities in fluid and electrolyte balance may be incurred associated with chiefly the onset of diarrhoe at the early postoperative date, and 2) in general, no abnormalities occur after the elapse of three months, which is duly attributed to a kind of compensatory property of the remnant G-I canal, and 3) no permanent debilities are elicited from the standpoint of fluid and electrolyte economy.
