As a result of the investigations on pathogenicity of enterococcus group isolated from 150 patients suffering from acute gastroenteritis, 14 strains have been proved to be capable of producing enterotoxic substances. The experiments performed on the extract of the toxin prepared from the 2 strains that were the most virulent have revealed the following results. 1. The strains that produced the toxin are the species identified as Streptococcus zymogenes. 2. The existence of a substance capable of producing such symptoms as diarrhea and vomiting that are generally associated with gastroenteritis in the heated filtrates of the microbes incubated for 48 hours in Dolman's medium in the air containing 20 of CO_2 has been proved. This would indicate that certain strains of enterococcus group are capable of producing enterotoxic substances if conditions are favorable. 3. The extract of the toxin can be prepared by the method developed by Fujiwara and his collaborators for preparing the extract of enterotoxin from staphylococcus group. 4.The toxin can be separated into the same fractions-polysaccharide and protein fractions-that compose the toxin produced by staphylococcus group; and it was poisonous only when both fractions. coexisted: 5. Paperchromatograms have revealed that the extract is composed of glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, methionine, alanine, histidine, glucose, galactose and raffinose. Although it cannot be denied that some of the above substances may have found their way into the culture mediums from other sources, it would still be possible to claim that the toxin under investigations and the toxin produced by staphylococcus group are different substances, for the former contains substances which have not been found in the latter.
