Of the 214 cases that received thoracoplasty treatment at our hospital between November 1944 and the end of 1952, I observed the types of the disease, conditions of bacillus discharge and their clinical figures (red cell sedimentations, temperature, weight, coughing and sputum), and how these were affected by the operation, and its relation with later development that followed, placing special importance on examples of long standing development and deaths. The result shows, 1) Of the 177 cases of which 1 could ascertain their development, 128 took work, 21 died and 28 are still sick. Of the patients who received this treatment more than 5 years ago, 37 are working and 3 are in bed, the deaths all occurring within 5 years of the operation. 2) Consistent cavity and exacerbation are not equally seen in all the cases, their occurrence depending on whether the disease originally accompanied cavity or not, and also on the type of the treatment that has been given. Cases which accompany these effects after the operation do not make as satisfactory a progress as the others which do not. 3) The virility of the bacilli after the operation is dissimilar, depending on whether the disease originally accompanied cavity or not, and also on the type of treatment administered, and the patients' progress after the operation is affected by such facts as whether there was bacillus discharge before or after the operation, and and if there was, its frequency, seriousness, and its time. 4) The clinical figures, of the patients, excepting their weight, invariably shows an improvement, and the greater the improvement, the subsequent progress is the more satisfactory.
