The author performed etiological and clinical investigation on 67 cases of tularemia (47 males and 20 females) which was reported in Chiba Prefecture from September, 1948 to December, 1952. The findings of the investigation are summarized as follows: 1) Etiological Matters The largest number of victim was reported during the period from 1948 to 1949, in the mountainous district in the southern tip of Boso Peninsula, in winter and in 20-30 age bracket. It was noted that there existed relations to a certain extent between temperature and the amount of rainfall and the outbreak of the disease among hares. Coming into direct contact with a hare was responsible for the infection. There were also two cases in which a contact with a rabbit or ticks caused infection. 2) Clinical Matters The majority of the cases were of lymphatic type, with a latent period of about three days and lymphoma occurring mostly in the armpit. Exudative pleurisy took place concurrently in two cases. The disease was characterized by an increase in the number of leukocyte, worseninig in erythrocyte sedimention rate, functional disorder of the liver and enlargement of the shadow in the hilus of the lung in roentgenogram. Cutaneous reaction and agglutination reaction were helpful in diagnosing the condition of disease, showing that immunity remained over a long period. Streptomycin was effective in curing the disease from which all the patients recovered in due course of time.
