In order to search for new antibiotics from thermophilic actinomyces, the author devised a new rapid and simple isolation method of them and collected about 2,000 strains from various soil samples. The studies on classification, mycology and antibiotics from active strains were carried out. The isolation medium of speciel device was a modified glucose Czapek's medium containing 0.2 % peptone, 0.002% nitrofurazone (furacin) and 3% agar. Twenty five cc of this medium was throughly mixed with 1 cc of 50 to 100 times dilution of soil sample, made into agar plate and incubated at 50℃ for 72 hours. As furacin was highly active against thermophilic bacilli, actinomyces was selectively isolated. The optinum temperatures of the isolates were examined and it was proved that only 5% of them were so-called obligate thermophilic and the rest were facultative type which grew at any temperature range between 25℃ and 50℃. Antimicrobial activity of the strains were investigated using M.aureus var. 209p, B.subtilis, E.coli, Mycobact. avium, Mycobact. 607, Asp. niger as test organisms. It was found that 268 out of 2,000 strains were active againtst at least one of the test organisms. Antibiotic index of thermophilic actinomyces was generally lower then thet of m esophilic one. But it was as high as 50% in the case of hot spring soil, whereas it was very low in case of compost manure. From their bacteriological characteristics and microbial spectrum, these strains were devided into 14 groups. Ten groups (63 strains) belonged to genus streptomyces and four groups (23 strains) to genus thermoactinomyces. Four antibiotics were obtained from the strongly active strains.
