A study on 'electrocardiograph (including Master's test) was carried out throughout the preoperative and postoperative period in patients undergoing extirpation of the carotid body for broncheal asthma. The main purpose of this study is to elucidate influences of this surgical attack on cardiac function. This survey covers 300 preoperative and 180 postoperative cases (80 cases at the one-week postoperative date and 100 cases at the follow-up date). On the other hand, intracardiac and pulmonary blood pressure were compared by means of intracardiac catheterization throughout the preoperative (10 cases), postoperative (6 cases) and follow-up period (7 cases). From these studies, the following results were obtained: 1) Abnormal findings in standard limb leads were noted in 29 per cent of patients with broncheal asthma, which resembles the previous data reported by other people. 2) It was also evidenced that this operative procedure by no means rendered any ill-effect to the postoperative electorocardiogram and, moreover, it brought the improvement of electorocardiographic findings with recovery from onset of asthma. (About one-week postoperativedate). 3) No marked differences were found between preoperative and follow-up date. Corelation between abnormal findings in E.C.G. and follow-up results seemed appreciable. In other expression, abnormalities in E.C.G. increase gradually in those patients whose follow-up results are rather disagreeable. 4) Preoperative and postoperative electrocardiogram were compared in 46 cases with broncheal asthma, by which abnormalities were found only in 9 cases and 6 of them showed only auricular strain. 5) Both intracardiac and pulmonary blood pressure remained within normal limitations. Following extirpation of the carotid body, reduction in both pressures was temporally noted. No significant differences were present between preoperative and follow-up date. 6) Cardiac neurosis counts for 6 per cent of postoperative patients, in about half of which abnormalities of authomatic nervous system were noticed throughout the preoperative and the follow-up period. It was confirmed from these studies that, though there were some patients complaining of heart trouble after extirpation of the carotid, body, it was not attributable to ill-effect of this operative procedure to cariac system but to influence of medication used for a long time against the onset of asthma or to abnormalities of authomatic nervous system.
