Bacteroides tortuosus is a species found in the intestinal canal. Studied on this species of organism have not been carried out by many investigators. The author isolated 20 strains of B. tortuosus from the feces of normal persons and investigated their properties, which were compared with the descriptions carried in the literatures. The results obtained are as follows: 1) This organism is rodshaped, 1.5-17.0μ long and 0.4-0.7μ wide, Gram-positive, nonsporing, nonmotile and often occurs in long chains. It usually stains well in aniline pigment, and has no flagella or capsule. 2) It formed colony on Zeissler's glucose blood agar plate and 20% blood agar plate. It was not hemolytic. 3) It did not grow in any aerbic cultures. It, therefore, is an obigate anaerobe. 4) It did not grow in bouillon, agar and peptone water culture mediums, but grew in glucose bouillon, glucose agar and potato agar culture mediums. 5) It grew well in liver bouillon culture medium, but it did not digest liver or turn it black. Gas was not generated. 6) It produced acid in milk culture medium and coagulated it. 7) It did not liquefy gelatin. 8) Indole reaction was negative. It did not produce hydrogen sulfide. 9) 13 kinds of carbohydrates were used in the experiments for investigation of the organism's ability to decompose them. Certain strains showed activities different from those of others in decomposing rhamnose, glycogen and mannite. Then, 20 strains were classified into the following 4 groups according to the difference in their activities to decompose the carbohydrates: A group, 14 strains; B group, 2 strains; C group, 3 strains; and D group, 1 strain. 10) pH optima for its growth were found at 7.0-7.5. 11) It died when heated at 56℃ for 60 minutes and at 60℃ for 30 minutes. It also died in 0.05 % solution of corrosive sublimate in 5 minutes and in 2 % solution of carbolic acid in 30 minutes. 12) When exposed to air, it lost the ability to grow in 6 hours. 13) The strains were of homogenous species immunoserologically.
