Through pre- and post-operative period (for a period of 2 years), I have investigated function of the pancreas and liver on about 35 cases with cancer of the cardia which underwent radical operation by means of gastrectomy combined with splenectomy and resection of the pancreas in our clinic, and I have obtained the following results: 1) Blood sugar level and diastase level, which rose for a few postoperative days, returned to normal limitation within one or two weeks postoperatively. 2) Double charge test of dextrose through the mouth, which not infrequently revealed reduction of ability in disposing sugar intake, indicated that the inability . tended to normalize proportional to elapsing of time. Higher sensibility to insuline has been frequently shown among these patients on their discharge. 3) Study on exogenous secretion from the pancreas demonstrated secretion of trypsin was prone to reduce transiently. 4) The liver function, much deteriorated preoperatively, could not recover much and 2 cases who have developed into diabetes were noted among this group, however, the liver function, less impaired preoperatively, demonstrated a definite improvement on their discharge and through the period afterwards, which confirms that this operative procedure never has any disagreeable influence upon the postoperative physical condition.
