The author undertook investigations of the blood serum proteins as well as the functional activity of the stomach in 40 cases of various stomach ailments that have undergone gastroenterotomy at this clinic (The Kawai Surgical Clinic). The findings of the investigations are summarized, as follows: 1) It was observed that, prior to surgical operations, the total amount of all forms of protein was reduced and albumins were also reduced in amount, but α-, β- and γ-globulins were increased in amount in all patients under investigation. These changes were evidenced most markedly in gastritis patients, followed by ulcer and cancer patients in order of markedness of changes. 2) Improvement of the functional activity of the stomach, a portion of which had been removed by incision, almost paralleled the increase in amount ofall forms of protein and albumins and the reduction in amount of γ-globulins, while its aggravation almost paralleled the reduction in amount of all forms of protein and albumins and the increase in amount of γ-globulins. The functional activity took longer to improve in cancers than in ulcers. 3) It was observed that differences in the functional activity did not depend upon the size of the stomach left after incisions, and that even rose-water surgery was instrumental in bringing about complete recovery of ulcers and temporary improvement of cancers. 4) The operation B I achieved, better results than the operation B II. It was observed that, a short time after operations, the stomach tended to hesitate to empty, itself in the operation B I, while, in theoperation B II, there is a tendency on the part of the stomach to empty itself in precipitate action. 5) It seems that, when delay in emptying takes place, incised stomach experiences precipitate emptying before normal functional activity is restored. 6) Before operations, albumins showed marked reduction in amount both in ulcers and cancers where stenosis of high degree is involved, but improvement took place promptly after operations. Albumins also showed reduction in amount when the stomach hesitated greatly to empty itself after operations.
