The author has undertaken experiments on the intra-pleural pneumonorrhaphy in combination with pneumonolysis in rabbits, and the studies on the following subjects have been carried out: 1) The histological examinations, in chronological sequence, of the lung after pneumonorrhaphy has been performed. 2) The relations between the methods of suture and their effects on the lung, with special emphasis on suppuration caused by the existence of thread. 3) The effects of chemotherapy on sutured lung. In summary, the results of the experiments have revealed that, in order to achieve fullest possible effects of the operation, it is necessary to put in as deep a suture, as possible in the lung as well as the pleura for securing sufficient collapse of the lung, and that the suppuration in the tissue of lung, which entails deep suture, can be prevented by the systematic injection of penicillin locally.
