For the purpose of knowing the principal cause of fever in tuberculosis, I performed the following clinical and experimental study. 1) Following are the results obtained from the macroscopical and histo-pathological observations by autopsying 187 corpses of tuberculosis patients. a) Relatively close relations were seen between the extension of exudative caseous lesions in pul. tbc. and the altitude of body temperature. b) The extension of cirrhotic lesions and cavity have no relation to the altitude of body temperature. c) The body temperature in pul. tbc. ' is the same as in healthy persons. d) The body temperature in in tbc. is a type of remission. 2) Relatively close relations were seen between the quantity of tuberculin which is excreted in urine and the extension of lesions in pul. tbc., but in int. tbc. the quantity of tuberculin has no relation to the extension of lesions. Therefore, in in tbc. an attack of fever is due partially to the secondary infection. 3) Employing adult rabbits, the effects of living tubercle bacilli and heat killed one on body temperature were observed. a) After intravenous injection of more than 3 mg of heat killed tubercle bacilli in healthy rabbits, body temperature ranging was noted b) It was needed less quantity (namely 0.3mg) living tubercle bacilli than heat killed bacilli to raise temperature. c) On trying intravenous injection of more than 1 mg of heat killed tubercle bacilli, in rabbits sensitized with tubercle bacilli temperature ranging was noted. In view of above findings, I think that collapse of tissue cells resulting from tubercle bacilli is playing the most important role on temperature ranging.
