Studies were made of anemia in 37 premature infants by measuring Hb F levels as well as the erythrocytic count, the hemoglobin content and the color index every month since immediately after birth. Similar investigations were performed in mature infants (the control). The Hb F levels were higher in premature infants than in mature infants immediately after birth, the average amount of Hb F accounting for 72.3% of the total amount of hemoglobin in the former and 67.8% in the latter. Since then they rapidly fell until the infants were 6 months old, when both premature and mature infants were almost freed of Hb F. The fall of the Hb F levels in premature infants followed the same pattern as in mature infants, though it was slightly delayed in the former than in the latter. By the time both premature and mature infants were 2 months old, the erythrocytic count had reached the lowest levels, and it gradually increased thereafter. In premature infants it showed a tendency to fall again when they were a bout 5 months old. The hemoglobin content of the erythrocytes in premature infants, which had been higher than normal abult levels at the time of birth, had reached the lowest levels when they were 3 months old. Since then, it gradually increased, but tended to decrease again when they were about 5 months old. The color index in premature infants had been hyperchromic till about 2 months old, but had become hypochromic when about 3 months old. They were still hypochromic six months after birth.
