(1) With a view to conducting research on the possibility of the excision of vena cava superior in connection with the drastic surgical treatment of pulmonary cancer, the author carried out experiments in dogs. (2) As long as the circulation through V. thoracica logitudinalis dextra was maintained, the stoppage of vena cava superior did not constitute a threat to life. The congestion on account of the stoppage soon disappeared, leaving no postoperative complications worth mentioning. (3) When V. thoracica longitudinalis dextra was excised in addition to vena cava superior, marked congestion as well as persistent lowering in blood pressure was observed; electrocardiograms showed apparent disorder of cardiac function; and death ensued soon after the operation. (4) The additional excision of V. thoracica longitudinalis dextra, even though it was performed long after the excision of vena cava superior, resulted in the occurrence of such complication as hydrothorax, and proved to be fatal in the long run. (5) In an effort to discover the circulatory routes that serve as secondary channels of vena cava superior, the author performed venography as well as autopsy after injecting dye into the veins. As a result of the experiments the existence of the three secondary channels by way of V. thoracica longitudinalis dextra, V. thoracica interna and Vv. vertebrales interni was discovered. This will prove that V. thoracica longitudinalis dextra plays an important role in the maintenance of life as a secondary channel of vena cava superior. (6) It has been proved that the excision of vena cava superior is clinically possible as long as the circulation through V. thoracica longitudinalis dextra is maintained.
