Dynamic Interaction between a Leaf Beetle, Galerucella nipponensis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and an Aquatic Plant, Trapa japonica (Trapaceae) I. Life History Traits of G. nipponensis(Behavior and Ecology)

We investigated the life history traits of Galerucella nipponensis to clarify the relationship between the population dynamics of this leaf beetle and the phenology of its aquatic host plant, Trapa japonica. The developmental zero and the sum of effective temperature were estimated as 11.3℃ and 68.7 heat-day degrees (HDD) for eggs, 10.3℃ and 55.3HDD for 1st instars, 11.3℃ and 36.6HDD for 2nd instars, 10.3℃ and 70.9HDD for 3rd instars, 9.9℃ and 55.3HDD for pupae, and 10.1℃ and 122.3HDD for female adults from eclosion to oviposition. The dry weight of leaves consumed throughout larval and adult stages increased with the generation within 4 or 5 generations a year. Females that were reared throughout their life span under a short daylength (12L: 12D) and at 25℃ entered reproductive diapause. The pupa and young adults were most sensitive to photoperiod. Females reared under a long daylength (16L: 8D) from egg to the 33-day adult stage laid eggs continuously even though they were transferred to the short daylength.
