This research note investigates a reflective Journaling task assigned to Japanese university students studying English as a foreign language. Students are required to attend an English-only conversation area on campus and describe their experiences and linguistic discoveries. Observations of the instructor and perceptions of the students indicate that students find the task useful and that there may be limited development of metacognitive strategies and metalinguistic awareness despite shortcomings in the task design.
