Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850. This story revolves around Hester Prynne, who is convicted of adultery in Puritan society by Puritan authorities. Hawthorn describes the effort to resolve the torment suffered by Hester and co-adulterer, the minister Arthur Dimmesdale, in the years after their affair. I will examine the life of Hester. I will compare the two lives of Hester and Dimmesdale. Hester is condemned to wear the scarlet letter "A" on her chest as a permanent sign of her sin. For Puritan society, in those days, "A" means adultery. But Hester devotes herself to troubled people. People consider Hester to be "Our Hester". The meaning of "A" changes to "Angel". After Dimmesdale's death, Hester returned to Europe with pearl. But Hester alone came back to Puritan society. Lately, "A" means "Adviser" for American women. Hester came back to America as a New American woman. At the end of the story, "A" means "America". Hawthone pointed out two things about American literature of 19th century. First of all, he described Puritan Society through the two lives of Hester and Dimmesdale. Secondly, he described an American woman as a heroine.
