Ice crystal growth from the vapor has long been known to be limited by the presence of specific defects influencing the growth rate and leading to area and linear extreme growth rates in selected directions. Such regions require minimum ice supersaturation to initiate growth. Other surfaces, those having low index facets, require a supersaturation approaching that of water saturation to initiate growth and may be inferred to be smooth down to a molecular level.
