In this paper, a paradigm shift in the history of family sociology was examined by reviewing three disputes. The disputes featured in this paper were the Ariga=Kitano dispute, the nuclear family dispute, and the individualization dispute. From the findings of past researches, it was predicted that foci on the inside of family would become strong, whereas considerations on external social factors surrounding family would be weakened. Through reviewing three disputes, it was confirmed that there were two perspectives in each dispute. One is a perspective considering inside of family, and another is a perspective considering family in relation to external were factors. By asserting legitimization of each perspective, the conflicts connected to disputes were taking place. Through comparing three disputes, a segmentation of analytic units and a deficiency of nowness, which were post-modernism oriented, were confirmed. A traditional family or a nuclear family was the analytic unit in the Ariga=Kitano dispute and the nuclear family dispute. On the contrary, family member itself was the analytic unit in the individuation dispute. The fact that analytic units were subdivided corresponds to the increase of foci on the inside the family. Moreover, the social factors surrounding family were assumed in the Ariga=Kitano dispute and the nuclear family dispute, and the relatively/ historically-extant external social factors were presumed in the individuation dispute conversely. Considering only on the relatively/ historically-extant external social factors means the deficiency of nowness, and leads to a reduction of speculation on external social factors. In this way, sinlar findings to past researches were confirmed by reviewing three disputes.
