Through network analysis based on longitudinal data recorded officially and interview data, this paper presents an analysis of the relationship between networking and promotion for professionals within an organization. Many researchers focusing on professional workers and their career development have assumed that professionals are those who are highly skilled, independent, and autonomous. It is with these characteristics that they are believed to realize boundary-free career advancement. Contrary to such a notion, this paper shows that professional workers are, in fact, bound and affected by job relationships with superiors simply because they are "professionals". They are self managed and free to decide the scheme of their jobs, but such autonomous activities produce circumstances that bind them. The method employed here involves clique analysis and statistical analysis of data from previous research. Data is taken from each of the daily job schedules of a partner, manager and senior accountant in a large accounting firm for the period 2001 to 2005. The result shows that cliques changed their structure in accordance with restructuring in and around the division over the five-year period. Only a few powerful partners maintained their own clique with managers, and no managers made a clique with their subordinates. Managers having relations with cliques tended to be promoted faster than others. Based on these results, this paper shows the effects of belonging to a clique on professionals themselves and on their career advancement. Some limitations and topics for future research are also discussed.
