The purpose of this paper is to examine the variability of supermarket prices for a range of commonly consumed grocery items. The data relate to 1993 supermarket prices in south east Queensland. The main finding of the paper is that there is a high degree of variability across supermarkets for most grocery items. Bakery items such as croissants, buns and crumpets exhibited the most variability while canned vegetables were the least variable. The linkage between price variability and expenditure and price elasticities does not appear to be strong. This suggests that the prices supermarkets set are part of an overall selling strategy and are not designed to maximize the sales of any particular product.
