In this paper the writer has tried to introduce a copying book, the Hu-ts'e of Tzu-yang hsien, Shan-tung, at present in the collections of the Toyo Bunko (東洋文庫) . Although it consists of two volumes, it is only one-fourth or one-fifth of the original size. The volume contains material originally collected for the pao-chia ts'e (保甲冊). Although its exact date is unknown, its contents indicate that it has probably written about 1880. The writer has first surveyed the contents of the whole book. Then the writer has tried to examine the occupations of the 675 families listed, although the occupations of 104 of these families are not shown. According to this list, 319 families are engaged in commerce, and 64 in manual trade. The essential character of medium-sized and small towns in the late Ch'ing Period - their function as commercial towns - is made clear by these figures.
