Saito Mokichi in his life wrote more than 14,000 tankas, which are to be found in seventeen collections, begining with the Shakko (赤光) and ending with the Tsukikage (つきかげ). He was active as a fact for forty-eight years from 1904 until 1952. Mokichi, I feel, was a representative poet of the highest quality in the modern Japanese poetic world. He should in the future be studied from various points of view, but here, I should like to consider how 'he adopted foreign elements in his works. In orther words to what extent was he influenced by foreign culture. First, I should like to see how great was this influence in first two collections, the Shakko and Aratama (あらたま). In our analysis we can distinguish between a) the simple use of foreign words in his poems and b) the apparent assimilation of foreign elements into his poems. We find that in the Shakko there are eighteen poems of the first category and some thirty-one of the second - a total of about forty-nine showing foreigh influence out of 834 poems in the whole collection. In the Aratama we find A. 22, B. 30 or so: - we can say twenty-two poems of the first and about thirty of the second, or a total of about fifty-two out of 750 poems in the collection. Mokichi on the one hand was an oriental traditionalist, but at the same time he had a touch of the Western zest for life and occidental realism, life-worshipping doctrine or realism and in such things as his thought and painting, he shows many foreign traits. Modern Japan has been sender strong foreign influence in all ways, but Mokichi, while living under these condionons still created his own artistry with its particular color and passion. This study is chiefly aimed at analyzing his artistry, especially as seen in his earlier works.
