The aim of this paper is to clarify the usage of kango (Chinese-derived morphemes in Japanese) in spoken Japanese expressions, in particular, those which appear in daily conversations and simulated public speeches (monologues). By studying the frequency of kango words, we found that a) Kango words are more frequently used in simulated public speeches than in daily conversation, and b) men use kango words more than women. This may be attributable to the differences of the subjects of the expressions. Further analysis of the most frequently used kango words revealed that 1) many frequently used kango words are related to the topic of the utterance, 2) some others are generic words, 3) there are kango adverbs that are used only by specific individuals, and 4) formal kango words tend to appear in simulated public speeches while more informal words are observed in daily conversations.
