Between 1992 and 1996, explorations into the Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province, China, were carried out several times in order to observe the traditional rites of the Shui-Dai people, one of the largest minorities in that area. As a part of those explorations, the author visited thirty villages of that people and obtained substantial information about the following fourteen annual rites and five occasional rites. Annual rites: Sanhanbiimai (the rite for the beginning of the new year), Dansala (the service for the spirits of the people who have been killed outside the village), Hettnaa (the rite for the beginning of the rice planting), Linban (the service for the spirits of the ancestors of the village), Haowassa (the rite for the beginning of the period of religious purification in Buddhism), Dantannaa (the rite to pray for a good harvest of rice), Dantanlon (the special rite to donate to and pray to Buddha), Gonsaimuukon (the rite to drive evil spirits out of the village, involving the making of large sand-piles at the temple), Yaakwanhao (the rite at harvest time to invite the rice spirit of the paddy fields into the house), Danta (the rite to donate to the pagoda and to pray to Buddha), Ouwassa (the rite for the end of the period of religious purification in Buddhism), Pabaa (the rite to donate to the holy place and to pray to Buddha), Haolunbha (the rite of thanks giving for a good harvest, involving the making of large piles of rice grains inside the temple), and Ganban (the service for the land spirit of the village). Occasional rites: Danhoun (several rites for building a new house), Suuzhaitatti (the rite to drive evil spirits out of a house, involving standing a bundle of bamboo sticks against the truck of a holy tree), Hounkwannam (the rite to call back the spirit of a sick person from a stream beside the village), Sonpiisuu (the rite to drive evil spirits out of the village, involving setting cursed artifacts along the path), and Piitawan (the rite to pray to the sun spirit for the recovery of a sickperson). The actual activities of these rites are described in detail in this report.
