It is no exaggeration to say that publishing culture in Japan developed in tandem with Buddhism. While the publication of non-Buddhist works flourished during the Edo 江戸 period, there can be little doubt that the publication of Buddhist scriptures led the growth of publishing culture in both quality and quantity. The publication of Buddhist scriptures was carried out primarily by temples of various sects and bookstores. In particular, the publication of the Obaku 黄檗 edition of the Chinese Buddhist canon merits attention because of the influence it had on subsequent publishing culture. The publication of the Obaku edition was initiated in Kanbun 寛文 9 (1669) by Tetsugen Doko 鉄眼道光 at Obakusan Hozoin 黄檗山宝蔵院 and was completed in Tenna 天和 1 (1681). The base text is considered to have been a copy of the Jiaxing 嘉興 edition of the Chinese Buddhist canon donated to Yinyuan Longqi 隠元隆〓 by Shoshoin 勝性印 of Osaka 大坂 in Manji 万治 1 (1658). It does not appear, however, to have been a complete edition. Research in recent years has shown that early printings included texts from editions other than the Jiaxing edition. With the passage of time, these substitute editions (generally known as irehan 入れ版) were replaced by the corresponding texts in reprints of the Jiaxing edition. Current research is focusing on the elucidation of the base texts of these substitute editions and on the question of when and how they were replaced by reprints of the Jiaxing edition. In this article, I address the question of substitute editions in the Obaku edition with reference to three copies of the Apidamo jushe lun 阿毘達磨倶舎論 (Abhidharmakosabhasya), translated by Xuanzang 玄奘 of the Tang 唐 that are in the Naritasan 成田山 Library of Buddhism. From this perspective I clarify the manner in which the publication of the Obaku edition of the Chinese Buddhist canon was connected to the publishing of Buddhist scriptures in Japan during the Edo period.
