Today, international academic exchanges occur frequently, and studies of the late Ming dynasty scholar Zhu Shunshui (1600-1682), who went to Japan in the early 17th century, are well-known in East Asian academic circles in many different countries. Over the years, great strides have been made in the research. This paper is written from an East Asian perspective and discusses the research on Zhu Shunshui in Japan, China, Taiwan, and America. It covers four main topics: (1) It analyzes the publication and contents of documents related to works on Zhu Shunshui. (2) It reviews the characteristics of research on Zhu Shunshui and compares and contrasts it with work on related topics. (3) It investigates problem consciousness - the difference between academic research and political appeals. (4) It attempts to consider future research on Zhu Shunshui. I hope that this review article, which covers several decades of research on Zhu Shunshui, will identify problem areas in its history and forecast the direction of its future development. By so doing, it can provide students in this field with a more comprehensive and perceptive investigation than has been available up to now.
