<特集>文学の翻訳The purpose of this paper is first to examine how the Represented Speech in The Stoker, Metamorphosis is translated into the Japanese language. In the Represented Speech we hear two voices at the same time; the voices of the narrators and the characters. One translation hears the voice of the characters' but another hears the narrators'. Second, we can find this ambivalent structure not only in the Represented Speech but also in the narration from the characters' points of view. The narrators' and the characters' world appears to be ambivalent. This structure brings difficulties in translation. Third, we notice the influence of existentialism in the translations of Kafka's works. As such, the translator stands with the heroes and tends to simplify the stories, thereby removing any ambiguity.
