• The main theme of Shiga Naoya's "Wakai" has generally been regarded as the emotional conflict between the hero, Junkichi, and his father. Junkichi, however, observes his relation with the other members of his family more closely than with his father. And he recollects and reflects on how the conflict with his father was originally formed and finally resolved. This essay is an attempt to interpret "Wakai" as a domestic novel.
