Socalled "Shirasu" (lit. white sand) is widely distributed over southern Kyushu, but few researches have been made for it from the volcano-stratigraphical point of view. According to the writer's opinion, the " Shirasu " is white colored thick deposits caused by violent volcanic activities from Pliocene to Recent, consisting of pumice flows, pumice falls, their secondary deposits, tuffaceous and diatomaceous sediments, etc. The deposits are so complicated that it is very hard to study.
