It has been generally considered that non-potassic, calsium-free minerals and potash feldspar do not coexist in the metamorphic rocks of the epidote-amphibolite and amphibolite facies except in the high temperature part of the latter. However certain authors havd noticed that they do coexist quite generally in rocks of the Ryoke and Abukuma metamorphic zone, Japan belonging to the low temperature part of the amphibolite facies. The present writer considers that the above difference arizes from differences in water-vapour pressure during metamorphism. The vapour pressure is probably sufficiently high in the former case, while it is relatively low in the latter. In metamorphism, water plays a role of one of the essential chemical components, and at the same time its vapour pressure, combined with the rock-pressure, determine the type of metamorphism. Therefore, the metamorphic rocks may be reasonably treated from the two viewpoints: the metamorphic facies and the type of metamorphism. Based on this consideration, the writer schematically shows the relation between the subdivisions of the amphibolite facies and the types of metamorphism in Table 3.
