After reading the book Adam Bede, many people may find themselves asking the following question : "Why did Hetty have to receive such a severe treatment?" After Hetty's death sentence is perdoned, she is exiled to Australia; She is shown to die on her way home. She is not given the chance to rectify her past mistakes or return to her hometown. "Why does no one help Hetty?" John Sutherland provides clear and persuasive answer to this question. Whele he mainly examines the role played by Reverend Irwin, this essay focuses on the relation between the main characters in this novel and the recurrent words in the novel - "comfort" and "comfortable." The characters in Adam Bede seek "comfort." While Adam and Dinah derive comfort from their own work and attempt to make other live comfortable, Hetty wishes to lead a comfortable life without working for it. At a time when "work" was regarded as sacred, and in a novel that worships "work," only her idea of "work" and "comfort" deviates from those of the other characters. For this reason, Hetty is suddenly excluded from the text.
