The English Language Program (ELP) at Kwansei Gakuin University's School of Policy Studies encourages development of critical thinking (CT) skills in two ways: through task-based, communicative language teaching and through content-based instruction with an emphasis on analysis, problem-solving, and self-reflection. The task-based, communicative approach to language teaching fosters immediate analysis and self-reflection skills, forcing students to evaluate their own understanding and find effective ways of communicating a message. The content-based approach offers a chance to students to develop CT in a more thoughtful and conscious way, solving policy-related problems, discussing both sides of an issue, or rebuking an argument from their opponent's point of view in a debate or essay. This article justifies the ELP approach and explains its methods and applications.
