A stratified sample of test results were subjected to statistical analysis to determine both the overall efficacy of a placement test instrument and also discover those areas where the test appeared to be performing well or poorly. The analysis involved deriving coefficients of reliability for the test as a whole as well as its sub-parts. Additionally, item analysis of each sub-section indicated the extent to which those sections were easy or difficult, and whether they successfully discriminated between stronger and weaker students. Finally, distractor analysis was used to discover how particular items were failing to work effectively. The study found that the placement instrument was of acceptable reliability but was somewhat too difficult for most of the students The analysis enabled the reseacher to recommend a number of changes to the test that might improve its effectiveness in subsequent administrations.
