The purpose of this paper is to find a way to cope with the multicultural setting in a community through the analysis of cases where activities have been set by initiative groups like NPOs. We did case studies in Germany and Belgium, where educational support is provided for multicultural residents to join in their communities. Firstly we will describe the process of multicultural settings in Europe briefly and after that Internationale Begegnungszentrum Friedenhaus e.V. (IBZ) as the case in Bielefeld in Germany will be explained. It is like an international exchange association for the minority as well as majority. IBZ offers various programs to multicultural residents; in particular we will focus on the programs for immigrants' children. They get some support to learn German and to do their homework by university student volunteers. Their presence is to act as role models for immigrant children and through these activities university students also learn the situation of immigrant children and the best way to support them. Secondly, we will show two cases in Antwerp. One is the Toy Library; another is the activities of Community of Sant' Egidio. The Toy Library aims to offer a place for playing with various toys, picture books, etc. This place has educational functions for both children and young parents, especially young mothers. Playing with toys and other children helps development of children. And mothers can make some contacts with other mothers and social pedagogue, who can give some information and guide them in child care. The Community of Sant' Egidio takes the initiative in social welfare and educational areas. They supply poor people with food twice a week and give immigrants a chance to learn Dutch. Besides this it has some youth work programs and religious dialog among Christians, Jews and Muslims. The "School of peace" as a particular activity should be explained. It is held on Saturdays for immigrant pupils to support to learn Dutch and to do their homework. Young people who have an immigrant background support immigrant pupils on the street. It is important for immigrant pupils to get a good role model, such as the case mentioned above. Through these cases, we can offer some suggestions to cope with the growing importance of multicultural settings in Japanese society.
